Why are so many people not understanding that Catholicism is a denomination of Christianity?

Christianity teaches there is NONE above God, nor equal to God. The fact that Mary is prayed to puts her on the same level as Deity. This is considered idolatry to mainstream Christians & contrary to Christian doctrine. Many Christians view Catholicism as a cult not only for this, but because of numerous other things, as well.
