Can desperation be confused with hope?

I think sometimes I come off desperate when I just want to believe in people/love. What I would describe as being pionate, I'm certain a guy would describe as needy. I'm wondering are there guys out there that are able to recognize this? That maybe if a girl goes too far sometimes it's because they hope for the best in someone and not because they urgently need/want a relationship?
